UNIT 2: THEN AND NOW (2nd ESO)

Do you like history and learning about the past? Then you will be a fan of museums. Before you start working, take some time to explore the fascinating British Museum:

This unit is about contrasting the past with the present. As always, we start studying some new vocabulary: EVERYDAY OBJECTS. Try this matching activity to revise it:

In the reading, we learn about how The Aztecs, one of the most ancient civilizations in the world, changed the world. If you are curious and want to learn more about them, we have the perfect video for you:

Now, you should take some time to revise the PAST of the verb TO BE and THERE WAS/THERE WERE. Here you have some practice:

You can also test yourselves with this

You need to revise or study the modal verb COULD, to talk about past abilities. Just click on the word to see how it works and do some practice.

When talking about the past, PAST TIME EXPRESSIONS are essential, try this EXERCISE to practise them.

The next step is to learn about LIFE EVENTS. If you can answer this QUIZ, it means you have no problems with this vocabulary 😉!

Time to learn the PAST SIMPLE and practise it:

Want to practise it in a more fun way? Try this game, it's an escape room activity and in a museum!! Just click on the picture to start the adventure...

Finally, we studied how to talk about past habits and states, with USED TO. Again a game can help you practise it but in a fun way:

The writing of the unit is AN EMAIL TO AN E-PAL. You can find some more tips here:

That was a lot of work, wasn't it? Here you have another game (and related to the past) to keep practising your English and to have fun at the same time 😉:

INSTITUTIONAL PROJECT 4th ESO: Visit to Oviedo, the Fine Arts Museum and Tour of "La Regenta"

On 29th October,  students in 4th ESO went on a school trip to Oviedo. There, they learnt many things about the city, the artworks in the Fine Arts Museum,  the story of the magnificent book written by Leopoldo Alas Clarín, "La Regenta" and the places in the city where the novel took place.

They had some extra work for the English class: individually or in pairs, they had to prepare a video explaining some of the things they had learnt to an imaginary friend in the UK. Thus, they would practise their mediation skills.

Here you have some of the best videos made by students. We asked them to be creative and they really were!

Take some time to watch them; you will probably learn something new about the city! We did!

UNIT 1: AMAZING PEOPLE (3rd ESO)

This unit is focused on answering the question: who inspires you? All the activities will lead you to answer it in a special way, as you will see...

DESCRIBING PEOPLE

To talk about that inspiring person, you will need lots of adjectives. They will help you talk about that person's personal qualities.  Here you have a matching activity to practise the ones studied:

We also revised the SIMPLE PAST TENSE and studied the PAST CONTINUOUS. Here you have some extra practice:

Need a break? Why don't you watch this video about how the Moken kids can see under the water? There is an exercise in the book that tells you about them.

HELPING OTHERS
Again some new vocabulary, this time related to the different ways in which we can help people. Here you have some practice:

This can be a bit tricky, but with some extra practice you will ace it!

Finally, we studied some linking words (because, so, although) you can use to write a profile. Here you have some practice:

Hope all this has helped you to be able to answer the question we started the unit with:
Who inspires you?

HALLOWEEN COMPETITIONS: AND THE WINNERS ARE...

We must admit that we are thrilled: this year many students decided to take up the challenge and participated in the Halloween competitions, using all their wit and artistic skills to produce the works we showed in the previous post. Thank you!!!

Unfortunately, there can only be two winners and they are...

BEST MEME/GIF: Ariadna Feito (1st ESO)

Her meme shows all we asked for: our school in a ghostly way, a wicked witch and a creepy image that we can all identify with if such a terrible thing happened to our school...

BEST SHORT CLIP: Matthew Harvey (2nd Bach)

You will all agree that we have a genuine film-maker among us 📽👏!The sound effects, the editing, the script... are just mind-blowing. And what about the learning? Even better! Don't forget: procrastination kills!!

All participants got a special marshmallow lollipop and a no-homework pass. Besides there were balloons for everyone who attended the ceremony.

Here you have the winners with their presents (30 euros each to spend as they like!!!) and the proud English teachers.

            Have a spooktacular Halloween!!!

UNIT 1: MAKING MUSIC (4th ESO)

We are sure all students will like the topic of this unit: who doesn't like music? It brings so many positive things...

The WDYT? question is an interesting one: How can music bring people together? There are many answers and you will find out some while working with this unit. Let's see an example: in the following video you will see lots of famous artists who got together to sing the song "We Are the World"  written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritchie in 1985 to raise funds to help with the famine that was devastating Ethiopia at the time.

To talk about music, we need to refresh some vocabulary. Here you have a matching activity to practise it:

Time to learn a new verbal tense: the PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS. Here you have some practice:

EXERCISE 1

EXERCISE 2

EXERCISE 3

EXERCISE 4

Need a break? Try this GAME, especially if you like pizza 😉!

Now, you should get back to work and make sure you know when to use the PRESENT PERFECT SIMPLE or the CONTINUOUS FORM. Need more practice?

These FLASHCARDS will help you.

Time to study something that may be new for many: QUESTION TAGS. Here you have some extra practice:

Tired? Try this memory game:

Questions are quite tricky in English, aren't they? Well, imagine including prepositions in them, it becomes a nightmare! Don't worry, here you have some extra practice;

The writing of the unit is  A REVIEW (of a concert or music festival). If you need extra help, you can try this PRACTICE.

That was a lot of work, wasn't it? Let's finish with some music, the same way we started, to liven up,  things a bit 😉! Here you have a more recent version of the song we started this post with. This time the purpose was to help people in Haiti, who suffered a terrible earthquake in 2010.

4th ESO STARTER UNIT: WHAT DO YOU KNOW?

STARTER UNITS are always about revising what you learnt during the past school year. Don't worry if you feel a bit rusty after the summer, we all tend to disconnect 😉!

We will start revising some vocabulary related to HEALTH and WELL-BEING. Click on the words to get to a Quizlet to practise it. If that one is too easy for you, here you have a more demanding version of it: HEALTH and WELL-BEING 2.

Time to revise some grammar. Verbal tenses are essential, so you must make sure you know everything about them.

PRESENT SIMPLE / PRESENT CONTINUOUS

EXERCISES

MODAL VERBS are used all the time. They all share some common characteristics and are a bit tricky, because they can have different meanings:

ABILITY (CAN/COULD)

OBLIGATION (MUST/HAVE TO/MUSTN'T/DON'T HAVE TO)

ADVICE

Let's have a look at some more vocabulary, this time ADJECTIVES to describe PERSONAL QUALITIES. Here you have a matching game:

We also learnt about some tricky words: JOURNEY - TRIP - TOUR - TRAVEL. This video will help you understand these words:

Back to verbal tenses

You can also try this activity:

Then we revised USED TO (to talk about past habits and states).

Need a break? Here you have a GAME to keep practising USED TO.

More verbal tenses, this time PRESENT PERFECT and PAST SIMPLE

Again a GAME can help you learn and have fun at the same time 😉.

Thought you had finished? Unfortunately not! We also have to revise the main FUTURE TENSES. This chart can help you understand how to use them better:

You will need lots of practice, so here you have:

Now you will certainly need some fun:

If you work with all these activities,  you will be ready to start learning new things! Let's do it!
