IES SELGAS GUIDED VISITS - HERITAGE DAY, APRIL 2018

As you all know by now, students at IES Selgas have been very busy for some time, preparing their contribution to the Heritage Day the school suggested celebrating at the beginning of the school year.

The English Department tried to find an activity that joined both the spirit of the day and learning English. There was something else to bear in mind: most students should be involved in preparing it. After some thought, an idea came to our minds: our school has a past, a heritage: historical, pedagogical and architectural. That could be our starting point. Then, we often see pilgrims, on their way to Santiago de Compostela, go past our school, look at it and wonder what this impressive building might be. What about combining both things? That's it: we would offer guided visits in English!

First, we needed the information in English, so students from 2nd Bach B and 2nd ESO B prepared the translation. With those texts, a web page was created, in which the future guides would find the information to tell the tourists. Within the webpage, there is an interesting video in which 1st ESO students explain the change into today's secondary school. This is the webpage:

And this is the video they prepared:

The next step was to ask for volunteers to become guides in all groups, only to find out that many students wanted to take the challenge: thanks a lot for helping!

It was necessary to advertise the visits, so posters were created, as the one you can see at the top.  We also used the school web, our blog and our Instagram account.

What about designing a brochure that we could hand out and also leave in places such as hostels, tourist information offices, or just the café opposite the school? Students in 4th ESO were in charge of that, and the brochure designed by Carlos and Raquel was the chosen one. Students in 3rd ESO summarized the information that should be included. Everybody had a task!

Meanwhile, the guides had to prepare the visit, so they rehearsed it in class, for their classmates.

Finally, the time to put everything into practice came: from 16th to 20th April, during the breaks.  We kept our fingers crossed: would there be pilgrims or tourists for the visits? There were!! Not every day, but three out of five, which was a complete success. People from Brazil, Switzerland, Belgium, England... Fortunately, some teachers, parents,  and friends also joined the visits. Most guides were a nervous wreck, but they needn't have, since they did just great. Congrats everybody!!!

Here you can see some pictures taken during the visits. If you want to see the videos, you have got the link to our Instagram account above. There you will also find more details about every visit.

The activity was a great success, mostly because it could be carried out thanks to the joint effort of everybody, teachers and students.

THIRD TERM SPEAKING 2ND YEAR NON-BILINGUAL

This term your speaking test will be a presentation about a book, film or TV series that you liked.

To make the presentation, you have to use the app FLIPGRID (remember that some of you already used it in the first term). But in case you have any doubts, here you can find a TUTORIAL, prepared by a former colleague, Cristina Cabal. Thanks Cristina! It is very easy to use. With this app, you can record yourself talking and the rest of your classmates will be able to listen to your reviews and get to know about many different and fascinating stories and characters. Just remember that you can only talk for one minute and 30 seconds.

You have to upload their presentation HERE. (Remember that you will need the password that I gave you in class.)

I will use the following RUBRIC to assess your presentations, so make sure that you cover all the sections in it.

The deadline is Friday 25th May

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask me.

THIRD TERM SPEAKING - 2nd ESO (Bilingual Group)

Don't you think so? That's why this term we have decided that the speaking test will be a presentation about a book you have to read.

First, you should go to the library and choose the book. We don't want to force you to read a particular one, so you are free to choose the type of book (adventure, romantic, thriller...) you prefer. There is only one condition: the minimum level should be an adapted version for 2nd ESO or with an A2 level. However, if you feel confident enough, you can also choose any of the original versions available in the library. Once you have chosen and borrowed it, you MUST show it to your teacher.

To make the presentation, you have to use the app FLIPGRID. Some of you are already familiar with it. For those who are not, here you have a TUTORIAL, prepared by a former colleague, Cristina Cabal. Thanks Cristina! It is very easy to use. With this app, you can record yourself talking and the rest of your classmates will be able to listen to your reviews and get to know about many different and fascinating stories and characters. Just remember that you can only talk for one minute and 30 seconds.

Merche's students have to upload their presentation HERE  . (Remember that you will need the password that she gave you in class).

Rosa's  students have to upload their presentation HERE. (Remember that you will need the password that she gave you in class.)

We will use the following RUBRIC to assess your presentations, so make sure that you cover all the sections in it.

The deadline is Friday 25th May

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask your teacher.

Good luck and enjoy your reading!!
