I CAN'T HELP IT!

This English pill deals with an interesting expression in English which means that we are not able to control something. The sentence below is part of the chorus of a very popular Elvis' song, which means "I was not able to resist falling in love with you"

                            The form is: SUBJECT + CAN'T HELP + VERB-ING

For example, if I say "I can't help checking my smartphone all the time" that means that I can't stop checking the phone constantly. It is not intentional and I know that it is a waste of time but I keep on doing it because I can't help it!

Click on the image below if you want to listen to Elvis singing this beautiful ballad:

Another version from the 1990s by UB40:

And finally, Ed Sheeran's in Elvis  All Star Tribute in 2019:

We hope that you can't help learning this expression thanks to this beautiful song!

Not my cup of tea

Not my cup of tea

This week we've learnt the meaning of the expression "it's not my cup of tea", which means that you're not really very interested in something. This showcases the fact that tea is the British most popular drink. In fact, it's been roughly estimated that some 165 million cups are drunk everyday.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF TOLERANCE (16TH NOVEMBER)

Last Tuesday, 16th November, was the International Day of Tolerance and throughout the week the students from 1st year Bilingual and all the students in 2nd year have been working on this topic.

First, we listened to John Lennon's Imagine, an international hymn of peace in which the ideas of tolerance and respect are supported:

and did some vocabulary activities.

Finally, the students wrote their own ideas about tolerant and respectful behaviour on some paper hands we gave them. We used the holding hands because they are a symbol of union , respect , tolerance and fraternity.

This is the final result, just click on the hands to show the students' ideas:

A DATE

This week we have learnt about the two meanings of the word DATE. As you can see in the picture, "A calendar has a date", which refers to the days and months in a calendar. But the girl is angry/sad because she hasn't, and, in this case, the word DATE refers to a social/romantic appointment.

A LANGUAGE PILL A WEEK KEEPS YOUR ENGLISH FIT

This week, the English Department started a new activity that we will be carrying out this school year. Playing with words and the saying "an apple a day keeps the doctor away", we called it this way: A LANGUAGE PILL A WEEK KEEPS YOUR ENGLISH FIT. We want you to understand that you  can learn English in many different ways: listening to songs, watching films or TV series in English,  following social networking sites... The same way eating apples is healthy and, therefore, can avoid unwanted visits to the doctor, taking some "language pills" can help you improve your English.

There will be a final competition, divided into two levels (1st/2nd/3rd ESO and 4th ESO/1st Bach/2nd Bach) and prizes for the winners, so it would be a good idea to check the blog to revise the language pills seen 😉!

Hope you like this weekly break with routine and learn a lot from it, that's our main purpose!
