COUNT ON ME

Prepositions in English can be a nightmare for students. You think of the preposition used in Spanish and want to use the corresponding  one in English, but that doesn't always work.

This week's language pill shows one of those misleading examples. Watch the video, enjoy the beautiful song  and see that the verb COUNT is followed by the preposition ON:

SUBJECT + COUNT + ON + SOMEBODY

(meaning: you can rely on me, I won't let you down)

Apart from that, this song is a perfect example of the basic form of the  FIRST CONDITIONAL in English, used to talk about perfectly possible situations. If the situation mentioned in the conditional sentence happens, the situation mentioned in the main clause will happen:

[ IF + PRESENT SIMPLE ] , [ WILL FUTURE ]

You can see all the conditionals used in the song in this video, which includes the lyrics both in Spanish and English.

To sum up, what Bruno Mars is saying in this song is that if anything goes wrong, they can count on him, they can rely on him.

You can always count on language pills to learn something new 😉!
